Nick Broad
Nick passed away in a car accident in Paris in January 2013 – this blog is written in his memory and to keep his work alive by those that worked closely with him.
Nick completed his Masters degree at the University of Aberdeen, during which time he met his wife to be Paula. He spent seven years working as a Nutritionist to Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Shrewsbury Town football clubs.
In 2005 he joined Chelsea initially as a consultant Nutritionist but this role expanded over the next few years and he was appointed Head of Science from 2008 until 2011. After a period of consultancy with organisations such as Adidas and Manchester City Football Club, he was reunited with Carlo Ancelotti as his Performance Manager at Paris Saint-Germain.
Nick had an unexplainable drive; every single day was a new journey of discovery to find patterns and answers in the data he collected. He was innovative and pioneering, taking Sport Science in football to ground breaking levels. Nick had a big personality with a wicked sense of humour and mischievous side, which helped him warm to the variety of colleagues he worked alongside.
Thanks to Nick, many of the students he nurtured have been given opportunities at a variety of sporting organisations including Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid, the EIS, UK Athletics, GB Basketball, Houston Rockets and the Scottish Rugby Union.
Nick’s legacy lives on through this young generation of Sport Scientists he developed and the colleagues he worked with throughout his time, plus through the tribute lectures and awards in his honour at various conferences and events. This blog is another piece of his legacy, set up by three individuals brought together by Nick and wanting to share his passion through the work he loved.
